Battery type question

Post by Boolit_Head »

Had to change out the battery in my 2015 F150 King Ranch. Figured out that the BCS had to be reset and that has been done. What I am not clear on is if I need to change something else since I went from the 760 CCA lead acid to a 800 CCA AGM type battery? So far I have not found a definitive answer.

I also upgraded my battery to an AGM-type (2016 Transit Connect). I disabled BMS because I don't think it is ideal for an AGM. I did not have an AGM battery option in Forscan. I have been monitoring the charge voltage and current and I think the non-BMS option is best for this battery in my vehicle.

You should have an AGM option in Forscan for the F-150s. Selecting this should change the charging scheme because AGMs can handle slightly more voltage than FLA batteries. I don't know how this will work with BMS. Note: BMS targets 80% state of charge, not full charge. Maybe this is to minimize charging load?

Hi there,

I own a Ford Tourneo (= Transit) Connect 2018.

I am also close to a battery change - before this winter anyway!

Right now I have a Varta 80 Ah battery installed from factory.

I would like to change to an AGM Type with 95 Ah (same size factor).

*Does deactivating BMS charge the battery to its full state no matter which size is installed? The question is, because Forscan only offers these battery size (at least in F150s, which I don't own):

* Is it possible to define the 95Ah AGM battery in my system?

Thanks!

Yes. Disabling BMS will allow for a full charge for any battery type.

You only have the battery options shown in the list. I don't know how the CCA value will affect the battery performance...but I don't think it will make a noticeable difference (my guess is the size is used to calculate battery state of charge, which is used by the BMS programming). Selecting the battery type is more important.

My SOC value is not accurate but the battery is charging properly.

Hi!

Is this the correct way of disabling BMS?

I only have this option "Battery Monitor Sensor" related to the Battery Management in my BCMii configuration menu.

The factory setting was "02 - With Battery Monitor sensor", I changed it to "01 - Without Battery Monitor sensor".

Does my battery get charged to 100% with this setting?

Thanks!

Yes, that has been my experience. You can monitor battery charge current, alternator request voltage, state of charge etc with Forscan while you drive. This will confirm the charging scheme.
