Success with programming Ford Escape 2022 key fobs

I found several YouTube videos discussing programming blade key fobs for older Fords, but almost none specifically for the newer Push-Button Start (Intelligent Access) models. I wanted to share the specific workflow and differences I recorded while programming my 2022 Ford Escape (US Version).

My wife lost one original key recently, so I need to erase the lost one from the car and program a new one. I could pay a locksmith $150 to do it, but my software engineer colleague told me I could do it on my own even though he hadn't done it before. So I looked into it. This is my first time getting to know Forscan, so after doing some research, I bought VGATE vLinker FS USB FORScan OBD2 Adapter and a key fob replacement from Amazon. Here are the main differences from the HowTo instructions.

1. The free trial extended licence doesn't allow me access the PATS service, so I need to buy the extended licence, which is $20. I found the purchase link at https://forscan.org/support/show_conten ... o_purchase

2. On the official documentation page "How to program PATS using FORScan v2.3.*", it says "There are 2 types of secure access: coded and timed". But for my Ford Escape 2022, neither apple here. The PC laptop running Forscan needs to have internet access. It is almost instantly that you can start programming.

3. In my case, to make sure that the replacement key fob works, I tried to follow How to check blank PATS key, but I found it doesn't apply well to my car. In fact, I first programed the replacement key using "Ignition Key Programming" and follow the Forscan program instructions exactly. At the end of this step, the number of keys stored on my car is 3. I tested the replacement key and it works well.

4. Then I went through "Erase and Program Keys", which erased all 3 stored keys and allowed me to immediately re-add the two physical keys I had in my possession.

5. The last difference is that I didn't need to do any "PATS Module Initialization function" afterward.

From the moment that I had everything I needed to the final desired outcome, it took me about 10 minutes. I paid about $80 dollars: $30 for VGATE vLinker FS USB, $30 for key fob replacement, and $20 for extended licence.

Another nice feature of the Ford Escape 2022 I realized later on is that if any one enters the car using the key blade, the car will warn on the instrument cluster display that he needs to start the engine soon, otherwise the alarm will sound. According to my test, the car indeed starts to sound the panic alarm in 5 to 10 seconds if the engine isn't started. That means we won't need to worry too much about the theft using the key blade to enter our car because since he can't start our engine any more, the alarm kicks in and hopefully notifies us and scares the theft away.

Hope this helps.
