Crashing when trying to connect to J2534

Hopefully someone else has experienced this issue and knows the cure.
Only lately every time I trying to connect to a vehicle using a j2534 the program crashes after about 10 seconds. About 1 in 10 times it will actually connect.
Log on the screen shows no errors or even the checking xxxx adapter message does not show up. The bottom of the page shows connecting ELM device and then complete close.
Settings are set to J2534 and manual connect. Have the same issue with sm2 pro, autel maxiflash j2534
