BMS Reset Questions - 2013 Ford Fusion

Post by NightShift »

Hi guys, I'm still a noob when it comes to ForScan so I wanted to ask the community before I jump into this.

What's the proper procedure for a BMS Reset on a 2013 Fusion Titanium AWD 2.0 EcoBoost?
- I assume connecting a battery maintainer would be the first step, and then obviously connecting the vehicle to the laptop/software..
- Are there any other tasks/procedures that are recommended when doing a BMS Reset on such a vehicle?

I'm also curious if it will it force the computer to relearn Idle and/or shifting intervals or will it purely effect the charging/power system?

Thanks for any & all help!

Do not connect a battery charger. If you installed a new battery just perform the BMS reset. Otherwise do not do a BMS reset. BMS reset will not affect any other systems.

Ok thanks for the info.

I was asking because I suspect the dealership of misconfiguring the car after replacing the battery. I put a stronger battery in than it had previously, since Ford killed my battery while working on the car and blamed me for it, even after the initial battery and charging test was perfect when the car arrived. (This was BEFORE I had FORScan with a paid license).

They were supposed to update my PCM & TCM when replacing my transmission but after checking it in FORScan Beta, I see they didn't touch either of them and I believe the battery was showing as a 500 something CCA when the battery is actually around 800 if I'm not mistaken. The dealership performed the battery installation and BMS reset, but I have absolutely lost faith in them after the experiences I've had with them over the past 2 years..

Would that cause issues with the car? I have some strange issues with electronics from time to time and my SCCM is acting strange and throwing a code about voltage around the date/time the dealership had my BMS reset. But I will post that elsewhere when/if I decide to jump into that, I swear I seen the car was configured as a "Coupe" somewhere as well, not sure where I seen it though. When I get another chance to scan the car I'll take some screenshots.

You could also try,

Ignition in the OFF position.

Apply the parking brake.

Turn the ignition to ON (do not start the engine).

Flash the high beams 5 times.

Press the brake pedal 3 times.

The battery light should flash to confirm the reset.

Other than internet lore, I've never seen this published anywhere. Can you point to an official source for this?

I found it on www.diag.net https://diag.net/msg/m5j5qzcw2grpf19p3g8t3v2uvy

This procurer was for a ford transit. I believe it was in the owner's manual.

Maybe the poster can review the owner's manual online for battery change or maintenance.

I have also seen a video on YouTube (but the poster did not show the process being done or replacing a battery and some online posts stating this method is an alternative if you do not have a advanced scan tool or software for the vehicle accessible, but I have no idea if this process executes the same as performing the BMS Reset via FORScan - maybe someone can confirm?

It may be something useful in a pinch, but I haven't had the stomach to try anything strange with my Fusion, it's already punishing me enough without some new strange problem added to the mix.

My owner's manual (book & PDF versions) simply says to take the vehicle to a local dealership for battery related services, and installation/removal. So it's no help there.

The reason I wanted to perform a BMS Reset is because the last time I was reading the information from the modules, I noticed the battery information (such as CCA) looked incorrect (the dealership here is literally mentally challenged through and through so it wouldn't be the first time they mucked something up) and I wanted to make sure it's correct & reset properly because it has been doing odd things at times and I want to rule out anything basic.

If the battery values set in the module are wrong, do I just change them and leave it -- or do I BMS Reset after correcting the battery values in the as-built data? I wasn't sure if this data was set during the BMS Reset procedure or by editing the as-built data values -- so I wanted to ask you guys before moving forward.

Can anyone confirm?
