HV Battery rebalance information

I have a 08' Ford Escape Hybrid. Does anyone know (or could point me to documentation) what and how the rmode / rebalance function is actually doing, what is normal or successful rebalance condition, how often to perform rebalance. Are the cases when you shouldn't perform rebalance? Any links to discussions or information appreciated, Thanks!
