possible to upgrade firmware on china clone elm327

hello all, this is my first time posting, so bare with me. Yesterday I received my elm327 device that is a china clone (got it for free on amazon with unused gift card my job gave me), and when using the forscan app on my phone i'm told that the device is a china clone and that it won't connect. Is it possible to change the firmware on the device so that forscan will like it? or is the problem with these clones something more than the software? Thanks.
