I can't speak for remote start but, you will need it for the brake controller and brake gain on the 2017 f-150 for the system to work.

Hi it's only $50. for life if you would have taken your truck into the dealer you would have spent a lot more so I was worth the $50 bucks to me I think it pays for its self real fast

There is a free trial license that grants all of the same features as the paid license. If I'm not mistaken, you can renew it every two months.
