2020 Transit Connect Speed Limiter Removal

Post by push_limits »

I just got a 2020 Transit Connect cargo van for work. Being a fleet vehicle, it was ordered it with the "ENGINE GOVERNOR - 75 MPH MAX" option. I've searched the forums for ways to remove this restriction with no luck. The TC cargo is not a vehicle many people buy for personal use, and I certainly wouldn't buy one if it had its top speed limited to 75 mph. Luckily, I get one for free from work...it's my office and I spend all day in it. I'm guessing the company gets a fuel and insurance discount from the fleet company...while I get bullied and run off the road for not being able to pass at a decent speed. No thanks! So I figured it out on my own...Here's what I changed:

Vehicle: 2020 Transit Connect XL LWB
Engine: 2.0L GDI I4
Transmission: 8 Speed Automatic FWD

In the PCM AS-BUILT programming:

(OLD) 7E0-163-01: 0000-7900-00D4
(NEW) 7E0-163-01: 0000-0100-004D

(OLD) 7E0-163-02: 0111-0084-D9C3
(NEW) 7E0-163-02: 0111-0080-D983

I would consider myself a noob at vehicle modification, but I have made these changes to my vehicle and I no longer have to deal with the stupid *OPTIONAL* speed limiter. I also made a similar change to my previous vehicle, a 2017 TC XL LWB. The PCM programming is completely different on the 2017, so the code above will NOT work! Hope this helps!! 8-)

Hi there.

I have a Transit Mk7, and am trying to remove my speed limiter - except mine is limited to 62! I have connected using Forscan, found my way to the PCM As Built, and then have all the codes similar to your experience, all starting with 7E0.....except where your 'block numbers' went up as far as 163 (i.e. 7E0-163-**) mine only goes up to 7E0-018-**

What I'd like to know is how on earth did you work out which block was the speed limiter, and what you had to change the code to?!

Please do come back and tell us how you managed to figure it out, as it'll be super beneficial to people like me!

Thank you,
Adrian

I was able to find the as built data for a van with similar options and the same model year by searching dealership websites. I then used As Built explorer to compare my van as built with the dealership van. It was literally the only difference under the pcm as built. I made a back up and tried the changes. 75mph limit was removed.

I've never heard of the speed limit being set at 62. That's just dangerous!! My sure your van isn't using the My Key option to set it that low. If it is using My Key, there are ways around that too! Let me know if I can help in any way.

Thanks push_limits.

Cool method. Sadly as mine is a 2011 Transit Mk7, I might struggle to find similar vans at a dealership. I think that My Key must be a relatively new thing, so pretty sure that won't be on my van!

All seems pretty logical in your answer, apart from - How do you access As Built files just looking at dealership websites?

And yeah, 62 really does suck. On all UK roads that aren't motorways, vans aren't supposed to travel at more than 60mph anyway..... but yes, it's awful trying to overtake on a motorway!

Cheers

Here in the states, most dealerships make public the vin for each vehicle they're selling . Another thing you might try is using your own vin, but change the last digit or 2. Just enter the modified vin on the ford site to get that vans as built. Always make sure you have back up of your current as built just in case!

Oh yeah, that’s a great idea, I’ll try that this morning and report back when I find anything out.

Thank you for your help so far, you’ve given me some good leads!

Unfortunately, searching on the Motorcraft site (I assume that's where you mean to get the As Built records) it only shows a partial readout of the AsBuilt. It shows nothing for the PCM module, so I'm guessing they don't have full records available for vehicles that old. I've tried a bunch of similar VINs (differing the last two digits) and they're all the same story!

Changes on a TC are usually done in BdyCm (main) or BCMii (main), not by changing as built data. Does the 2020 have the menu selections?

Hi, thanks for the responses.

I had also posted this on the Ford Transit forums and somebody told me the same earlier. I can now happily say the van is de-speed-limited! Woo!

I had heard from a couple of places that the limiter could be in the PCM, and because when I connected, there was an option to ‘Reset speed limiter’ in the PCM configuration (non-as-built configuration, that is), I was only focusing my efforts on the PCM.

Additionally because doing the BCMii configuration said to make sure I had a fully charged battery (and the van has been stood on the drive for a little while) I didn’t ‘try out’ the BCMii configuration.

Sprinkle in a bit of beginners logic... BCM = BODY Control Module.... and the speed limiter would make most sense to be powertrain...I just didn’t pursue the BCM options, thinking that’ll just be to change mirror fold, DRLs etc.

Anyway, super happy it’s solved now, hopefully another beginner like me will read my experience and manage to do the same!

Cheers

Hi push_limits. Just to ask you how you got the new code to re program the PCM AS-BUILT speed limiter? Is an aleatory way? I have the same van (2019) with the same code except for the las 2 digits. I'll appeciate any help from you. Thanks
