PCM software update

Post by mtp.ttn »

Hi, I need to do a pcm software update on a 2016 ranger. Does anyone know the correct procedure and if it’s safe to do with forscan?
I’ve been tuning cars for over 15 years but I’m new to forscan.
Thanks

You can read more about using FORScan in this articles:

I would not flash firmware unless you have a specific reason to do so.

The owner wants the map modifying from a previous tuner. When I try to flash it it is telling me that the files are corrupt or incorrect. It needs putting back to original so that I can start from scratch. I just done know if I should use forscan or get dealer to put it back to original.

If it's not your car and you are responsible, have the dealership do the work. Firmware flash is risky and the PCM is too important to brick.

Fair enough, that is what I was unsure about.
I’ll tell him to get the dealer to do it and then bring it back to me.
Thanks for the replies.

Be advised, if the PCM already has a tune, you may not be able to install the factory files with IDS. Sometimes the tuner software locks the PCM. You would need the hardware used to install the tune, and have it re-install the original files. Again, this sometimes happens.

The tune was done before he bought it so we don’t know who did it.
Will see if the dealer can overwrite it.
As I’ve not used forscan much I don’t want to chance bricking it.

Download and install Beta 2.4.6 and activate with extended license. With 2.4.6 you can update all modules to the latest strategy. I have done this several times with my '19 Whippled F150. Dealer didn't even know how to flash back to As built with IDS to do the latest module updates. Once modules are updated you can load your tune back in. Done this on dozens of vehicles. BE CAREFUL!
