How to solve "Incompatible configuration" problem on programming new AWD RDU / ATC barcode

Post by FORScan »

We periodically receive complaints that people cannot program new RDU ATC barcode using FORScan, the error "Incompatible configuration" is thrown when user tries to write new barcode using the PCM Module Configuration function. This error means that the code entered is not correct and not accepted by the module. The same problem will occur if user tries to program the ATC barcode using Ford IDS instead of FORScan. It is not really clear why it happens, our theory is that old modules are able to recognize only codes that contain digits 0-9 and letters A-F. New barcodes may contain other letters that are not recognized by old modules.

One of our users who experienced this problem found that there is a service bulletin that contains a workaround, here is the source link:

And here is the text:

SSM 51181

2013-2016 Escape/Fusion/MKZ - Integrated Diagnostic Software (IDS) - Error Message When Updating The All Wheel Drive-ATC Barcode

Some 2013-2016 Escape/Fusion/MKZ vehicles may display an error message when updating the All Wheel Drive-ATC Barcode using the IDS service function after installing a new rear drive unit assembly (RDU) or active torque coupling (ATC) clutch assembly. To prevent this error from occurring, enter the universal ATC 4 digit barcode 7772. Once programmed, perform several figure 8 turns at parking lot speeds to verify there is no binding from the all wheel drive (AWD) system. If the vehicle binds in a turn, perform Pinpoint Test A. Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 308-07A > Diagnosis and Testing.
