Ideashop® ELM327 V2.1 USB Scanner Interface

Post by Humphrey »

So I found these two guides while looking for something else:
http://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4
http://www.jamessimpson.co.uk/elmconfig ... functions/
and immediately wanted to do it so I set out to amazon to buy one after reading around. (Are these two guides doing the same mod of a device for different software?)

This is what I bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WHZ ... ailpages00

I opened it and noticed it was off significantly less quality than the two pictures in the above guides. I most likely will be returning or just buying another one.

The wires connecting to the plug are barely gaugable.

I have read a couple post here and there about clones. I suspect I have one but I don't know.

Which one should I get when/if I do?
I choose USB but Bluetooth and Wifi are okay as long as I would be able to perform the mod.
I have the 2.1, clone or not, I says on the amazon page "Auto CAN-BUS Diagnostic Interface", does that mean this one can atomically switch been High and Mid CAN or is it just saying what the device is, a can-bus diagnostic interface for auto vehicles?

~UPDATE~
Okay so I installed the drivers from the disk that came with the device.
Plugged it in and I have a yellow triangle on the device in Device Manager.
This is what I see in FORScan though I could be using it wrong.

On the device, when it is plugged in a get a flash of lights across it and then a solid RED light.

~UPDATE 2~
Okay so I have advanced a little.

This is what I was seeing. I was sure it was just a box with flashing lights.

I got to looking around and found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8cojWp8qY0
It shows how to fix prolific usb to serial com drivers in Windows 8.1.

Now I see this:

So it will function as it should so far, I have yet to plug it into a car. (I am receiving errors in their program cause the OBD2 plug is not plugged into the chip. I unplugged it cause its cheap wires are breaking off the solder pins. If I have to keep this, I thank myself for taking pictures so that I can re-solder these wires.)

Hi!
Why don't You buy an OBD extension cable and make an universal mod for any adapter You have?
Poor wiring and bad soldering is the main reason for that.

How much did You pay for the adapter? I barely beleve it's legit v2.1. for 12USD.
For last couple of weeks I was looking around on ebay for a real ELM327 v2.1 version, but did not find any. Same problems as described here.

I paid, rounded up, $19. That was for the device and shipping.

I have sent them a refund request. Of course I have to send the item back but since I have been inside it, they may not honor the refund.
Currently, the only OBDII scanner I have is a harbor freight model and only the device and its OBDII plug. (It comes with computer connector and disc.)

Sorry to hear that :|
Take a look for example at this post. May be You can find something that is already tested and working? I'm using the adapter I added to the list.
Found on ebay. No problem so far.
