Unable to identify vehicle - USB ELM327

Post by armorer1984 »

I have been unsuccessful in identifying my 2003 Explorer Sport Trac using a USB ELM327 v1.5. It uses J1850 PWM protocol. I was able to connect using the Scantool software but am needing to dig a little deeper into an ABS fault using FORscan.

I was able to query the ELM through a terminal and reset to all defaults and tried using the AT commands AL (Allow long messages) and AR (Automatic Retrieve) with no results. FORscan simply will not identify my vehicle. My connection is correct with COM4 and 38.4k. I read the notice for the bluetooth modules not working correctly, but this is USB.

Any thoughts?

This problem most likely is not in ELM but in FORScan. The error means that FORScan was able to connect to vehicle, but was unable to either read the identification info or to interprete the information. If you use FORScan version less than 2.1.19, please install 2.1.19, it has few problems like this fixed. If you already have 2.1.19 installed and still experience the trouble, please send us internal FORScan log by email as described here: http://forscan.org/contactus.html. We address such issues with high priority, so in majority of cases such a fix is a question of 1-2 days.

Mine are this one with Bluetooth Function

No problem with Bluetooth. The connection process was easy

1. Plug the scantool into Car OBDII female socket which is usually below the driving wheel.
2. Insert car key and switch to Accessory ON position for static data reading,
3. Scan the iCar from your Desktop/Notebook PC/PDA wifi device.
4. Find "BUYOBD" to link. Enter password which is on the item label.
5. Switch car key to Start position to read more dynamic data readings.

I have test it to o some basic diagnosis, read /clear fault code, test vehicle speed, display data, engine RPM, but for other functions i did not try it out.

After all, we would not expect much for the low price scan tool
