Identify these Parts??

Post by NightShift »

Hey guys,

I recently had my 2013 Fusion hoisted up because my struts are getting very weak and my suspension seems to need some help (been noticing more vibration and rougher ride lately so I wanted to take a look - and I'm having trouble identifying 2 parts (one of which I suspect to be a damper or mount? - see below) -

The 2 parts/pieces I'm trying to Identify are:
1.) What's connected to the bolt (the black piece holding the bolt I suppose) that is splitting apart the metal it's threaded into (a damper or support maybe?)
2.) What is the bolt screwing into that's splitting apart (the metal that's cracked/breaking around the bolt where the bolt is threaded)

I used PostImage.cc for the image hosting & links:

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! I've had mechanics telling me all kinds of different things so I'm confused as all hell at this point.

It looks like there's another threaded hole the exact same size right by the broken hole, but I would need an extended version of that black piece in order to reach it.. Please tell me what you think - I need all the help I can get.

That's a roll restrictor & the part that's splitting apart is the transmission

Thanks Dan,

This piece has completely broken off of the Transmission now, seems to be a defect in the trans that began with just cracking and then grew into a chunk surrounding the bolt hole that broke away from the Trans, and I have a lot of vibration when driving so I'm wondering how to fix this..

There's an identical threaded hole on the Trans that's about 1.5 inches away from the broken hole is, do you know why that's there? - and is there an extended roll protector (perhaps for another model like the Escape?) that would reach that threaded hole? I'm baffled on how to re-secure it..

Any suggestions?

The Forward hole is left over form older Fusions using the 6F35 transmissions( up to 2012 and I have a 2010 AWD) which had a two bolt Roll Restricting bracket, not the L shaped bracket shown(Two bolts through the L shape into the back of the transmission) used from 2013 and up! Up to 2012 also had a different PTU and a different roll restrict anchor on the Engine cradle!

That Break looks fresh(Little to no accumulated Road debris in the break and the bolt looks like it was loose but that could be from the lost thread and initial torque)!
From the bubbled nature around the back side of the mount I would venture a guess that the Vibration(if it is Fast Drive line Vibration and not slow wheel vibration) you say you are experiencing may have had something to do with it as it looks to me like a metal fatigue crack that has progress very quickly!
It also looks like there is crack forming around the unused bolt hole so any engineering you do there is probably only going to prolong the eventual transmission replacement!

Being as this looks like an AWD Fusion I would be suspicious of rear drive shaft vibration and I would also be looking for seal leaks from the PTU and the Rear differential input pinion seal as well as loose Drive shaft Ujoints and/or steady bearings!(PTU=Power Transfer unit or Rear Drive transfer case)! Drive shaft vibration problems very often show up first as related seal leaks!
Also these PT units have a very high failure rate after about 100,000 KM if the oil is not changed regularly(They have very little oil in them and they can get very hot)( I just replaced one in the aforementioned 2010 AWD at 124,000KM and the oil in it was black sludge)!

From your Images the 2013 PTU at least has a drain plug! The older PTU had to be removed in order to change the oil!

Unfortunately the only right way to repair that break is to replace the transmission after finding the reason for the vibration!

Don't Know for sure but after 55 years in the business, my feeling is something is concentrating vibration stress around those two holes and your remark about vibration is what jumped right out at me!

Third photo. Looks like something impacted the subframe. I don't believe that edge is supposed to be rolled over.

thats definately the case, its had a smack on something which has bent the lip over and resulted in the mount being forced back and snapping the bolt casting off

Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience tractmec! I really appreciate the detailed instructions - they really help me learn so thank you for the time you put into your reply!!

I will look into doing some PTU maintenance soon, and I had actually asked my local dealership about the PTU maintenance schedule for this vehicle, being that's it's AWD, and the service department looked at me like I was asking them to check my windshield oil level and didn't really have an answer for me, and two of the guys hadn't heard of a PTU but then again nothing surprises me around where I live at the moment

Joh & radman - yes I believe you're exactly right. I made a big mistake and bought this car in Jacksonville, FL used but only had 1 owner from a car lot with a big inventory - who would later take over 3 months to get the title in my hand after he was paid.. I hadn't seen the bent subframe until the engine splash shield (underbody shield) fell off about a year and a half after buying it, when the screws/retainer nuts gave out and I finally seen it naked from underneath  I also noticed parts had been replaced as if it was rear ended slightly but no claim or accident report was ever filed - and I have no idea what else has happened to the car either..

I completely regret buying this car after realizing the lack of maintenance & care given by the original owner but I have no way out of it until I can pay it down some more and then take a big hit to my wallet by trading it in somewhere (hoping they don't notice any of the major issues before I can sign it over :? )

To patch it up - can I have the subframe heated up just a little with a torch and then bent forward to straighten it out? And possibly have something welded to the bracket to meet the other hole to give me a temporary fix for now? I'm not exactly sure what to do about the Transmission chunking off like that

Huge thanks to you guys for the help so far!
