New key error

Post by Pacauto »

Hi, I'm trying to program some keys for a 2006 C-Max. It keeps giving me an error, so I deleted the old keys to program new ones later. But I've reset the PAT system about eight times, and it keeps giving me an error. It displays a message saying it doesn't always work the first time and asking if I want to try again, but it just stays there. Has anyone tried this successfully?

You should never delete old keys until you know the new ones can be programmed, especially if they are aftermarket.
Because you don't have a programmed key now you may find the vehicle is in a status of alarm active. You may have to wait 10 or 20 mins for that to stop first.

Your always better adding a key instead of seething them all.
Also it may have failed to program due to a system fault.
If that's the case then you won't get anywhere until that's resolved.

Thank you for your response.
The instrument cluster is corrupted. I ordered a new cluster and adapted the mileage, VIN, and synchronized it with the engine, but it wouldn't let me insert the keys. It already had two keys coded, but the PAT system was active.
After the code search time, it said it might need several cycles, but after six or seven cycles, you realize there's no way to adapt new keys. It said that sometimes it wasn't possible until the system was erased. But that didn't work either.
Finally, I got the spare keys and was able to get one working by adapting the cluster's Hex programming and adding the key. The car started, and I took it to an authorized service center to have the other keys coded. But it's not the first time I've tried everything, and it still won't code the keys.

Im glad you got one working and got it moving.
I would have thought that once you have one key programmed that you should find it easy to do the next.

Does it give you access to pats or how far do you get?

That's the problem I've always had when trying to program a key. It opens the PATS menu, selects "Add Keys," and then it just stops. It always gets stuck on the "I need to click more" button to access new keys. I can spend 30 or 40 minutes doing this cycle: turning the ignition on, turning it off, waiting 35 seconds, turning the ignition on again... and nothing happens. It does finish and delete the keys, though.
