I currently have 5.6.5 firmware. But how do you update to newer versions? I have the sln updater 2.x program, but it just exits out in automatic mode and in manual mode it tries a bunch of baud rates and never actually connects to the device.

Same as you, automatic didn't work. I had to manually select the com port that the adapter was connected to.
