MK3 Focus ABS reprogramming without access to original ABS

Post by Cascadoo »

Hi, this is my first time using Forscan and I need assistance with the ABS reprogramming procedure.

The vehicle in question is a Ford Focus MK3 with 1.6 petrol engine. It was purchased from an auction with ABS module missing. A module was sourced and installed but I am having some difficulties with the process. I was following a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6A7F22OPR-Q) on the replacement procedure, however when I got to the ABS config (ASbuilt format) Forscan says it's unable to get data on the module after selecting the "Load Factory AB" option.

At this point, I have the ASbuilt data from the motocraft website and I can see that the module numbers that show up for the ABS pump on Forscan do not match any of the numbers from the ASbuilt data. How do I go about programming this?

AS built data from motocraft:

Module Address Instructions

7D0-01-01 1210 3388 00B6
7D0-02-01 0454 4400 0076

726-01-01 0100 0100 0031
726-01-02 001E 0900 085F
726-01-03 0134 0001 036A

It is not uncommon for the Motorcraft site to have missing or incomplete data.

Each module will have data in a separate number range. So 760xxxxxxx seems to be the address range for the ABS module. If there are no 760xxxxxx numbers on the Motorcraft site then the data was not saved by Ford.

Now you have to find a similar car and read the ABS module data with Forscan or use its VIN to see of Motorcraft has any data or find another clever way to find data. Good luck.

Well that sucks. We had access to another car (wrecked), similar specs but the abs module was missing from that too! Unfortunately I did not record the Vin of that vehicle as I wasn't aware of the process and also didn't have access to Forscan and the cable yet.

Am I right in understanding that the range like 760 etc would represent a specific module? Also would the non programmed ABS module prevent the car from starting? At the moment the engine would not even turn over.

Yes, 760 addresses are for the ABS module (based on your observations from the new module). I don't know if the abs module will prevent the vehicle from starting. But I would suspect PATS is the problem before ABS. There are others on the forum who are PATS experts, not me.

Forscan Data on the replacement ABS Module:

760-01-01 0000 0000 0069
760-01-02 0000 0000 006A
760-01-03 0000 0000 006B
760-01-04 0000 6C
As Don stated that 760 AsBuilt address is for the ABS and the 760 you have shown above looks like it has been zeroed(All data has been written to "0" except for the Check sum, 69, 6A, 6B, 6C at the end of each line)! Unusual but not impossible in a Used module!
All those zeros should be either numerical or an Alpha character! The Last two characters on each line are a Check sum that is calculated during the writing of the Characters in the other positions(in the case above the check sums were calculated by writing the zeros)!
In all ABS modules I have seen so far, the VIN is Hex coded into those first characters address so those positions should not be all zeros up to the last two on each line!

You will need the VIN Number from the Vehicle you intend to install this in and a hex editor to install the correct characters into each of those Addresses(In Windows look up a program called Notepad++ with the Hex editor Plugin installed see link below)! I will attach an example of the VIN in HEX Code for my 2010 Fusion in a Hex editor!
My Fusions VIN begins as 3FA and ends in 678 so the hex characters will start with 3346 in the first four and end in 3738 in the last four

Example

760-01-01 3346
760-01-04 3738

Or in your case my Fusion would look like the below plugged in place of your zeroed ABS above!
You will have to type your VIN into a Hex editor(See Notepad++ https://notepad-plus-plus.org/, with the HEX Editor Plugin) In order to install the correct VIN Hex and again the last two characters will change depending on the content of the other positions(69, 6A, 6B and 6C are check sums for the Zeros in your post above and not part of the VIN hex)
760-01-01 3346 4148 5069
760-01-02 3043 4731 416A
760-01-03 5231 3739 366B
760-01-04 3738 6C
The above is just an example it is not correct for your vehicle!

The VIN in Hex Code will need to be hand typed into those address 760 sections of FORScan Configuration and Programming (AsBuilt format) ABS address 760 and click "Write all"! There will be a Check sum error alert but the write should proceed as the check sum will be calculated by FORScan during the write!

Some vehicles do have to have a Corrected VIN in the ABS and a PATS parameter reset/Pats Module Initialisation(see Wrench Icon PATS service procedure in either the IPC or the BCM) performed before the Engine will be allowed to start!

Hope this is not just confusing?

Do not know if this Helps?

Thank you for that very detailed post. This was very helpful.

Following your instructions, I was able to convert the VIN to hex with notepad ++ and it does fit the text field just like the example you showed. I will post an update once I get to test it on the car.

HI, Did you manage to solve your ABS. I had the exact same problem with a used ABS module. Used the Hex method and got the 760 address correct.
however, the car is still not starting and is showing "immobilizer malfunction service required". i did a DTC scan and the follwoing came up on the PCM.
"U0418-Invalid data receieved fromBrake system control module A" Please can someone assist🙏

You may need to run the pats inititalisation if the module is used for pats.
